Exploring Our Area

The Angel Inn sits at the foot of the waterfall trail in Pontneddfechan, at the southern tip of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park.  From our door you can join well-known trails through steep wooded gorges to a string of impressive falls, rivers and pools. It is a handy base for short strolls, half-day hikes and longer adventures, with good options for families and dog owners.

What you will find

  • Waterfalls and woodland. The Afon Mellte, Afon Sychryd and Afon Nedd Fechan carve through ancient oak woodland and narrow gorges. Waymarked paths follow old tramroads and riverside tracks with plenty of photo stops.

  • Trails for different energies. Choose from gentle out-and-back walks to viewpoints or link routes for a longer circuit. Surfaces vary from smooth gravel to rocky, stepped sections.

  • Wildlife and geology. Keep an eye out for dippers, wagtails and moss-covered rock formations. This is a Special Area of Conservation, so please stick to marked paths.

  • Handy facilities. Public toilets and main car parks are in Pontneddfechan village and nearby. The Inn offers hearty food, cask ales, hot drinks and a warm spot to dry off after rain.

Things to do nearby

  • Classic waterfall walks. Popular routes include paths to Sgwd Gwladus and Sgwd y Pannwr on the Afon Nedd Fechan, and the Sgwd yr Eira trail where you can walk behind the curtain of water. Allow extra time in busy months.

  • Short family strolls. The Sychryd gorge walk to the roaring falls is short, dramatic and good for mixed ages. Expect some rocky steps.

  • Longer days out. Confident walkers can link multiple falls on circular routes that take three to five hours, returning to the village.

  • Caves and heritage. The area has rich industrial heritage, with old silica mines, lime kilns and tramway remains along the routes.

Good to know

  • Terrain and safety. Paths can be narrow, steep and slippery, especially after rain. Good footwear is essential. Keep back from river edges and supervise children near water.

  • Parking. Whilst The Angel offer its own car park this is solely for customers of The Angel WHILST they are customers.  There is on road parking in the village and dedicated  waterfall car parks near by.

  • Weather. Conditions change quickly in the gorges. Bring layers and waterproofs. Mobile signal can be patchy on trails.

  • Dog-friendly. Dogs are welcome on the paths but please keep them close as there is livestock and steep drops, and pack water and a towel for muddy paws. The Angel Inn is dog-friendly, with a simple dog menu available.

  • Leave no trace. Take litter home, stick to paths and avoid entering fast-flowing water.
